About this position

Tampere University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow specializing in bioinformatics to join the Genomic Regulation for Precision Cancer Medicine Lab, led by Professor Alfonso Urbanucci, within the Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology. The lab is part of the Prostate Cancer Research Centre (PCRC) and focuses on genomic regulation for precision cancer medicine, with a particular emphasis on prostate cancer. The research environment is multidisciplinary, combining strengths in technology, health, and society, and offers opportunities for impactful research and education.

The successful candidate will contribute to two main projects: (1) investigating genetic predisposition to medication-induced side effects, leveraging large-scale genomics such as the FinnGen study, and (2) understanding metastatic potential and tumor immunobiology at the single cell and spatial level, utilizing omics approaches, short and long read sequencing, TCR/BCR profiling, and predictive models for patient stratification. The lab collaborates with Tampere University Hospital (TAYS) and is embedded in a vibrant research community with expertise in biomedical engineering, biotechnology, medicine, and health technology.

Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, or a related field. Essential skills include proficiency in statistics, genetics, immunology, cancer development (especially transcriptomics), and experience with high-throughput sequencing and multi-omics data integration. Familiarity with spatial and single cell genomics, methylation, ATAC-seq, TCR/BCR analysis, and in silico data generation is advantageous. Candidates should demonstrate a strong understanding of gene transcription regulation and cis-regulatory elements in cancer, experience developing reproducible computational pipelines (preferably with workflow management systems like Snakemake), and ability to containerize applications using Docker, Singularity, or Apptainer. Knowledge of deep-learning methods and at least one first author manuscript in omics data analysis in an international peer-reviewed journal (published or in press) is required. Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and experience teaching bioinformatics at the university level are considered assets.

The position is full-time and fixed-term for two years, with an estimated start date of 2 May 2026 or as mutually agreed. A six-month trial period applies. Salary is determined by the Finnish University Salary System, job demands levels 5-6 for teaching and research staff, and includes competitive benefits such as occupational health care, flexible work schedule, modern research infrastructure, teaching facilities, campus amenities, and a personal fund for sports and cultural activities. Tampere University offers a stimulating, international research environment with strong collaborative networks and opportunities for career development.

To apply, submit your application via the Tampere University online recruitment system by 9 April 2026. Applications must be in English and include a CV (TENK guidelines), publication list (Research Council of Finland guideline), cover letter (max 1 page), and names/contact details of at least two referees. For further information, contact Professor Alfonso Urbanucci ([email protected]) or HR Specialist Lilli Sarasvirta ([email protected]).

Finland is recognized for its stability, safety, and vibrant academic and cultural scene. Tampere, the largest inland city in Finland, is a major academic hub surrounded by nature, offering excellent quality of life and opportunities for outdoor activities.

Funding details

Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
