About this position
The German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA) in Hamburg is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Latin American Politics. GIGA is a leading independent social-science research institute, focusing on political, social, and economic developments across Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East, and connecting these regional insights to global questions. The successful candidate will join the GIGA Institute for Latin American Studies, contributing to innovative comparative research and participating in one or more of GIGA’s four cross-regional Research Programmes, which cover accountability and participation, peace and security, globalisation and development, and global orders and foreign policies.
This full-time postdoctoral position is initially offered for three years, with the possibility of extension for another three years following a successful evaluation and subject to funding availability. The salary is based on EG 13 TV-AVH / TVöD. The role is designed for further professional qualification under the Academic Fixed-Term Contract Act (§ 2 WissZeitVG). The thematic focus is open, but candidates must demonstrate a strong research agenda in Latin American politics with clear policy relevance. The position involves knowledge exchange and outreach activities, including policy advisory and media engagement, but does not require teaching, although opportunities to teach at partner universities may be available.
Applicants must hold a doctoral degree (or have submitted their dissertation by the time of appointment) in political science or a related social science field such as sociology, social policy, or public policy. Essential qualifications include an emerging publication record in top peer-reviewed journals, field research experience in Latin America, proficiency in advanced social science methods (quantitative and/or qualitative), and fluency in English and in Spanish or Portuguese. Experience with policy exchange and knowledge transfer activities is desirable. GIGA values diversity, work-life balance, and gender equality, and actively encourages applications from persons with disabilities. Part-time options are available.
To apply, candidates should fill out the online application form and send a single document containing a short cover letter, CV (including publications and reference letter writers), a one-page research outline, and copies of MA and PhD transcripts to [email protected]. A written sample should be provided as a separate PDF. Screening of applications begins on 25 February 2026. For further information, visit the GIGA homepage or contact Prof. Dr. Merike Blofield at [email protected].
This opportunity offers a dynamic environment for postdoctoral researchers interested in Latin American politics, comparative social science, and policy-relevant research, with strong institutional support for professional development and outreach.
