About this position
The University of Bergen invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow position in physical oceanography at the Geophysical Institute and the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research. This three-year, full-time position is part of the Arctic Ocean 2050 program, a major national research initiative focused on understanding the present and future evolution of the Arctic Ocean. The program brings together 18 Norwegian partners and integrates interdisciplinary fieldwork, innovation, and advanced ocean and climate modeling.
The successful candidate will investigate how changes in the Nordic Seas and Arctic overturning circulation affect water masses and circulation in the subpolar North Atlantic. The research will utilize existing observations, ocean reanalyses, and numerical models to address the impacts of a transitioning Arctic climate, including the transformation of warm Atlantic waters into cold, dense overflows that influence the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC).
The position offers a stimulating academic environment at one of Europe's leading climate research centers. The Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research is the largest climate research center in the Nordic countries and is internationally recognized for its contributions to climate science. The postdoctoral fellow will have opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration and may allocate up to 10% of working hours to career-promoting activities such as teaching.
Applicants must hold a PhD (or equivalent) in physical oceanography, climate dynamics, meteorology, physics, applied mathematics, or a related field. Candidates who will complete their PhD by July 1, 2026, are also eligible. Essential qualifications include a strong understanding of ocean and/or climate dynamics, experience in statistical analysis of ocean/climate data, and proficiency in scientific programming (e.g., Matlab, Python). Knowledge of Arctic Ocean and North Atlantic circulation is advantageous. Proficiency in written and spoken English, the ability to work independently and collaboratively, and strong personal and relational skills are required.
The position offers a gross annual salary of NOK 657,000, with potential increases based on experience, enrolment in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, and comprehensive welfare benefits. The appointment is for three years, with the possibility of extension for up to one additional year if externally financed research stays abroad are secured.
Applications must be submitted via the JobbNorge portal and include a research statement, detailed qualifications, contact information for two referees (including the main PhD advisor), CV, transcripts, diplomas, relevant certificates, and a publication list. If the PhD is not yet completed, a statement confirming thesis submission is required. The application deadline is April 17, 2026.
For further information about the position, contact Dr. Marius Årthun at [email protected]. The University of Bergen is committed to diversity, inclusivity, and equal opportunity in recruitment.
