About this position

The Centre for Technology, Innovation and Culture (TIK) at the University of Oslo (UiO) is offering a 3-year Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Science and Technology Studies (STS), focusing on the licensing system for aquaculture in Norway. This position is part of the APPROPRIATE project, funded by the Research Council of Norway, which investigates how licensing systems serve as tools for democracy and the appropriation of land and natural resources for societal and economic purposes.

The postdoctoral fellow will join a dynamic research team at the TIK Centre, working closely with the project’s principal investigator and a PhD candidate. The research will analyze how different valuation practices influence planning and decision-making processes, the role of economic reasoning and expertise, and how conflicts and dilemmas are negotiated in the pursuit of effective licensing procedures. The project takes a broad approach, examining both contemporary and historical, political, and economic contexts of licensing in Norway, with a particular focus on aquaculture and wind power. The postdoctoral position is dedicated to the aquaculture case.

The TIK Centre’s STS research group provides a stimulating academic environment, with opportunities for collaboration and professional development. The position is based in Oslo, Norway, and offers a full-time contract with standard salary and benefits according to University of Oslo regulations. Funding is provided by the Research Council of Norway.

Applicants should hold a PhD or equivalent in History, Economics, Political Science, or Geography, and have a strong research background in STS or related fields. Experience with qualitative research methods and an interest in environmental policy, licensing systems, or aquaculture is desirable. Proficiency in English is required.

The application deadline is 12 April 2026. For more information and to apply, visit the official job posting on JobbNorge. For academic inquiries, contact Dr. Kristin Asdal or Dr. I. J. Ullern at the TIK Centre.
