The National University of Singapore (NUS), in collaboration with the Centre for Climate Research Singapore (CCRS) and as part of the Climate and Weather Research Alliance Singapore (CAWRAS), is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Fellow for a two-year position in next-generation urban weather and climate modelling. The successful candidate will join the Urban Climate Lab within the Department of Geography, a globally recognized leader in urban climate research, and contribute to the Weather Science Research Programme (WSRP), a national initiative advancing tropical urban weather and climate science.
This research project focuses on representing Singapore's urban complexity and its impact on local weather, developing advanced modelling systems using the LFRic atmospheric model and the JULES urban canopy model on national supercomputing resources. The work involves close collaboration with local research institutes (NEA, A*STAR, NTU, NUS) and international partners, including the UK Met Office. The Urban Climate Lab supports both experimental and modelling research, with interests spanning micrometeorological measurements, urban heat island effects, satellite-based land surface temperature studies, and the development of urban-scale meteorological analysis methodologies.
Applicants must have a PhD (ideally within the last six years) in atmospheric science, meteorology, physics, or a related discipline, with demonstrated expertise in model analysis and evaluation. Experience with numerical weather prediction (NWP) or Earth system models such as WRF or the Unified Model is required. Preference is given to candidates familiar with next-generation frameworks like LFRic, land surface models like JULES, and urban canopy models. Advanced scientific programming skills in high-performance computing environments, experience with AI and advanced data analytics, and management of large geophysical datasets are highly desirable. Strong communication skills, evidenced by peer-reviewed publications, and the ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary, international team are essential.
