About this position

CSAG (Climate System Analysis Group) at the University of Cape Town is inviting applications for two postdoctoral research fellowships under the WISER programme, focused on regional climate services co-production. The positions sit within a multidisciplinary applied climate change research group and are embedded in the WISER Southern Africa programme.

The fellowships are designed for early-career researchers who want to work at the interface of climate services, co-production, stakeholder engagement, risk communication, and science-policy interaction. Fellows will support regional organisations and NMHSs, engage stakeholders to shape climate-informed priorities, and conduct independent postdoctoral research on climate-services-related topics. The role also includes contributing to learning, capacity development, and knowledge exchange within CSAG and the wider WISER network.

Funding: each fellowship is valued at ZAR 500,000 per annum, tax-exempt, with separate support for research-related travel and workshop costs. The fellowship is full-time and tenable until 31 March 2028, subject to satisfactory progress and continued funding.

Eligibility highlights: applicants must hold a PhD in a field relevant to climate, environmental, or sustainability science, awarded within the past five years. They should have strong knowledge of participatory and co-production approaches, a good understanding of climate services and climate variability/change, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work across diverse science-society settings. South African citizenship or a valid South African work visa is required, along with nationality from a WISER-eligible Southern African country and the right to live and work in South Africa for the full fellowship period.

How to apply: submit a motivation/statement of suitability (max 1,000 words), a CV with publications, and contact details for at least two academic referees. Applications and enquiries should be sent to Alice McClure at CSAG via [email protected]. The post states there is no fixed closing date; applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until the positions are filled.
