About this position
The Instituto de Sistemas e Robótica - Porto (ISR-Porto) is inviting applications for a postdoctoral research grant in the field of Cyber-Physical Control Systems and Robotics. This position is funded by the SYSTEC Research Unit - Centre for Systems and Technologies, through national funds from the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT), and is based at the ISR-Porto facilities on the FEUP campus in Porto, Portugal.
The successful candidate will join the Cyber-Physical Control Systems and Robotics Laboratory (C2SR), contributing to the development and integration of innovative automation and monitoring solutions for cyber-physical systems, specifically applied to plant production in controlled environments. The research will focus on the development and analysis of advanced control algorithms for autonomous and cyber-physical systems, including nonlinear and hybrid dynamical systems, with an emphasis on stability and performance guarantees. Key tasks include designing and implementing control strategies for motion planning, stabilization, and obstacle avoidance in dynamic and uncertain environments, as well as integrating control-theoretic approaches with learning-based methods to enhance adaptability and performance while maintaining formal guarantees. The role also involves experimental validation of proposed methods, including hardware-in-the-loop and real-world testing on robotic or unmanned platforms, and active participation in scientific publications and dissemination activities.
The fellowship is for 12 months, with the possibility of renewal up to a maximum of three years, subject to project duration and FCT regulations. The monthly maintenance allowance is 1,851.00€ (EUR), paid by bank transfer, in accordance with the FCT table of values. The position is full-time and requires on-site presence at ISR-Porto.
Applicants must hold a PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Materials Engineering, Mechatronics, Systems Engineering, or a closely related field, awarded within the last three years. The postdoctoral research must be conducted at a different institution from where the PhD was obtained. Candidates must not exceed three years of accumulated postdoctoral research grants. A strong background in control systems, autonomous systems, robotics, or cyber-physical systems is essential, along with experience in modeling and control of nonlinear and/or hybrid dynamical systems. Proficiency in English and programming skills in MATLAB/Simulink, Python, C/C++, or ROS are required. Candidates must be able to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
Applications should be submitted by email to [email protected] and [email protected], with the project reference (ISRP-PosDoc-SYSTEC) in the subject line. Required documents include a motivation letter (in English), certificates of academic degree, detailed CV, copy of PhD thesis, declaration on honour, and any other relevant documents, all in PDF format. The application deadline is 14 January 2026 (23:59 Lisbon time).
