About this position

Postdoctoral Research Scientist “Ultrafast Optical Nanoscopy” at the University of Oldenburg

The University of Oldenburg is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher for the group of Prof. Christoph Lienau in the Institute of Physics / School V of Mathematics and Science. The project is part of the Center for Nanoscale Dynamics and the Ultrafast Nano-Optics working group, with close collaboration with the Scanning Probe Spectroscopy group (N. Nilius).

The research focuses on ultrafast nano-optics, ultrafast optical nanoscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, scanning probe microscopy, and ultrafast near-field spectroscopy. The planned work aims to develop a new low-temperature SNOM/STM experiment and an ultrafast oscilloscope capable of tracing local electromagnetic fields with sub-cycle time and sub-nanometer spatial resolution, to study energy- and charge-transfer dynamics in nanoscale quantum materials.

This is a full-time E13 TV-L position (100%, suitable for part-time) and is limited to 3 years. The position is funded through the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft and the Niedersächsisches Ministerium für Wissenschaft und Kultur (DyNano). The start date is listed as 16.05.2026.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should have a qualifying university degree (master, diploma or similar) and a PhD in physics or a related area. The university expects competence in at least two of the following: scanning probe microscopy, ultrafast optics, spectroscopy, nanoscience, and solid-state physics. Strong motivation, communication skills, and teamwork ability are also requested.

Application deadline: 12.04.2026. Apply by email with a single PDF containing a motivation letter, CV, publication list, and copies of university certificates. Questions about the project can be directed to Prof. Christoph Lienau. The application portal and job page are also linked in the post.
