About this position

The Clinical Genomics team at the Biomedical Informatics Lab (BMI Lab), ETH Zürich, led by Dr. André Kahles and headed by Prof. Gunnar Rätsch, is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher in bioinformatics. This interdisciplinary group is part of the RADIANT-Dx consortium, developing innovative diagnostic technologies based on long-read sequencing and real-time sequence analysis. The project aims to address the urgent need for rapid and accurate identification of bacterial infections in clinical settings, particularly for conditions such as sepsis where timely diagnosis is critical.

The successful candidate will contribute to the development and implementation of novel computational methods for analyzing long-read sequencing data, including pre- and post-base-calling analysis. Responsibilities include designing robust algorithms and statistical models for real-time transcriptomic analysis of host and pathogen data, integrating bioinformatics approaches into a translational research project, and collaborating with bioinformaticians, microbiologists, clinicians, and engineers across ETH Zurich, the University of Zurich, and the University Hospital Zurich. The role also involves leading computational research projects, publishing in top scientific journals, and advancing methods in microbial genomics, sequencing analysis, and applied computational biology.

Applicants should have a PhD in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, or a related quantitative field, with a strong foundation in algorithms, data structures, and statistical modeling. Experience in sequence analysis, microbial genomics, and long-read sequencing is highly desirable, and familiarity with signal processing or machine learning is advantageous. Candidates should be motivated to develop innovative computational methods and contribute to interdisciplinary research with clinical impact, ideally supported by a strong publication record.

ETH Zürich offers a dynamic research environment, professional development opportunities, and numerous benefits including public transport season tickets, car sharing, sports facilities, childcare, and attractive pension plans.
