About this position

International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL) in Braga, Portugal is recruiting a Postdoctoral Researcher for the CHAMP-ION project / Sotomayor Research Group, focused on atomistic simulations of phonon transport in semiconductors and metals.

The research topic sits at the intersection of physics, materials science, and computational modelling, with emphasis on nanoscale thermal transport, phonon-electron interactions, density functional theory (DFT), lattice dynamics, and Boltzmann Transport Equation (BTE) simulations. The group works on nanophononics, phononic crystals, thermoelectricity, opto-mechanics, acoustic metamaterials, topological bosonics, and NOEMS.

The successful candidate will perform lattice dynamics and phonon calculations, contribute to electron/phonon transport modelling, and support experiments and data analysis. Experience with Quantum ESPRESSO, VASP, ABINIT, EPW, ShengBTE, almaBTE, BoltzTraP, Phono3py, Linux, Python/Bash, HPC workflows, and related tools is highly desirable.

Eligibility: PhD in Condensed Matter Physics, Materials Science, or a related field; postgraduate research experience in semiconductors/metals; strong background in DFT and transport simulations; interest in low-temperature transport phenomena and reproducible computational research.

Funding and benefits: full-time 24-month contract with competitive salary, tax benefits, diplomatic privileges, private health insurance, family allowances, relocation support, nursery access subject to availability, support for dependent children’s education fees, and 30 days annual leave.

Application window: opened 2026-05-22 and closes 2026-06-15 at 23:00 Lisbon time. Apply online and upload the required documents (cover letter, CV, diplomas, and at least one reference letter).

Funding details

Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
