About this position

Ghent University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher position in the Department of Geography, Faculty of Sciences, as part of an EU-funded project focused on climate change adaptation. The successful candidate will join a dynamic, interdisciplinary team working to advance understanding of climate-related impacts on economic sectors, with a particular emphasis on the agricultural sector. The project aims to develop decision-support tools, sustainable adaptation strategies, and capacity-building programs to foster transformative regional change, in close collaboration with European partners.

The postdoctoral researcher will conduct advanced research on climate-resilient agricultural systems, food security, and rural socio-economic transformation within the framework of sustainable development. Key responsibilities include analyzing governance mechanisms and stakeholder behavior in regional adaptation strategies using both qualitative and quantitative methods, designing and evaluating evidence-based policy models for climate adaptation and land-use management, and integrating research outcomes into European climate and rural development frameworks. The role also involves contributing to scenario writing, policy briefs, and strategic recommendations, as well as organizing joint workshops, capacity-building events, and scientific dissemination activities. Participation in international conferences and preparation of peer-reviewed publications are expected, alongside mentorship of graduate students and support in project coordination and stakeholder engagement.

Applicants must hold a PhD in a relevant field such as Agricultural Extension and Education, Agricultural Economics, Environmental Management, or Climate Policy. Proven expertise in climate change adaptation, food security, and rural development is essential, as is a strong background in statistical and spatial analysis tools (e.g., SPSS, MAXQDA, AMOS, LISREL, PLS, GIS, RS). A solid publication record in high-impact journals on sustainability, land-use policy, and climate change governance is required. Candidates should demonstrate excellent English communication and writing skills, the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in an international, interdisciplinary environment, and ideally have experience with Horizon projects.

The position is offered as a contract of definite duration for 8 months, with the possibility of renewal depending on project progress and funding. Remuneration is determined by salary scale PD1 to PD4 (doctoral degree), and the role is part-time (50% occupancy rate). Additional benefits include 36 days of holiday leave (annual basis for full-time), annual fixed bridge days, bicycle allowance, eco vouchers, access to training, research support services, and mobility opportunities within the FARCLIMATE network. Ghent University is committed to promoting gender equality and diversity, and encourages applications from qualified women and individuals from underrepresented groups.

To apply, candidates must submit their application online through the Ghent University e-recruitment system before the deadline of 28 November 2025. Required documents include a CV (with publication list), motivation letter, copy of PhD diploma (with certified translation if not in English or Dutch), and optionally documentation of relevant project experience and contact information for two professional referees. For further information, contact Prof. Dr. Hossein Azadi at [email protected].
