About this position

The University of Luxembourg, a leading international research university, is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher in Computer Science to join the Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine (FSTM). The successful candidate will be based in the Department of Computer Science and participate in the FNR AI-HPC 2025 BRIDGES project GenePPS, which focuses on leveraging machine learning for gene perturbation prediction in drug discovery. The project aims to develop innovative models that combine foundation models and graph neural networks to accelerate therapeutic target identification, integrating large-scale single-cell foundation models with structured biological knowledge encoded in genomic graphs.

As a postdoctoral researcher, you will lead the development of hybrid foundation model-graph neural network architectures, design novel training strategies under experimental constraints, and conduct large-scale benchmarking across diverse single-cell datasets. Collaboration with Helical-AI, an industrial partner specializing in genomic foundation models and HPC-enabled model deployment, ensures that methodological advances are developed with direct translational and scalability considerations. The project will deliver efficient algorithms for model training under budget and time constraints, facilitating flexible adoption and integration into production-grade platforms. Results will be evaluated in real-world target identification workflows, including outsourced experimental validation.

The ideal candidate will have a PhD in computer science, machine learning, computational biology, or a closely related field, with a strong research track record in machine learning, AI for science, graph learning, or related areas. Expertise in deep learning, foundation models, transformer architectures, graph neural networks, representation learning, and large-scale training is essential. Strong mathematical and algorithmic skills, excellent programming abilities in Python, and familiarity with modern ML tooling and reproducible research practices are required. Experience with GPU-based systems and HPC environments is advantageous. Interest in interdisciplinary research at the interface of AI and genomics, prior experience with biological data or computational biology, strong teamwork skills, and fluent English communication are expected.

The University of Luxembourg offers a modern, dynamic, and multilingual environment, with high-quality equipment and close ties to the business world and Luxembourg labour market. The position is a fixed-term contract for 24 months, with a yearly gross salary of EUR 85,176. The planned start date is September 1, 2026, at the Belval Campus. Applications should be submitted online through the HR system, including a CV, cover letter, PhD diploma or expected defense date, transcript of courses, list of publications, and contact information for 2-3 referees. Early applications are encouraged, and all qualified individuals are invited to apply. The university promotes an inclusive culture and upholds equality and respect for all employees and students.
