About this position

Ghent University, a leading institution in Belgium, is seeking a postdoctoral researcher in dendroclimatology for a contract of limited duration (18 months, 70% occupancy) within the Faculty of Bioscience Engineering, Department BW20 - Omgeving. The position is part of the ACTREAL FWO project (G019521N) and involves delivering final project outputs, overseeing completion, and supporting ongoing PhD projects in dendrochronology and climatology.

The successful candidate will process increment cores, apply X-ray CT scanning to extract tree ring width (TRW) and maximum density (MXD) series, and generate wood-density profiles. Responsibilities include analyzing datasets, producing A1-level scientific publications, implementing data management procedures, and supervising PhD candidates in their analyses and publication preparation. The role is highly interdisciplinary, combining environmental science, earth science, biology, and physics.

Applicants must hold a thesis-based doctorate (PhD) in (Bio-) Science/Engineering, Physics, Earth Sciences, or a closely related field, obtained before the contract start date. Essential qualifications include a strong background in dendrochronology, paleoclimatology, X-ray CT scanning, excellent analytical skills, fluency in English, good communication skills, hands-on lab experience, and ICT/programming skills (Python/R). Candidates should demonstrate an open mind and a multi-disciplinary attitude.

Ghent University offers a competitive remuneration according to salary scale PD1 to PD4 (doctorate required), a 70% contract for 18 months, and a range of staff benefits including training and education opportunities, 36 days of holiday leave (full-time equivalent), annual fixed bridge days, bicycle allowance, and eco vouchers. The contract starts on 1 September 2026 and ends on 29 February 2028.

To apply, candidates must submit their application online via the Ghent University e-recruitment system before 15 April 2026, 23:59 (Brussels Time). Required documents include CV and academic transcript (merged PDF), cover letter (PDF), diploma (with translation if not in Dutch, French, German, or English), reference letter, and overview of study results. Applications sent by email or submitted after the deadline will not be considered. Ghent University encourages applications from all backgrounds as part of its equal opportunities and diversity policy.
