About this position

The University of Luxembourg, a leading international research university, is offering a postdoctoral position in Digital/Computational History at the Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C²DH). The C²DH is renowned for its interdisciplinary approach and commitment to innovative research and public dissemination in contemporary history, with a strong emphasis on digital methods and tools. The centre aims to redefine the study, teaching, and presentation of Luxembourg and European history in the 20th and 21st centuries, fostering creative scholarship and new forms of engagement.

This postdoctoral opportunity is part of the Impresso project, "Media Monitoring of the Past II. Beyond Borders: Connecting Historical Newspapers and Radio," which is a collaborative initiative involving C²DH and Swiss partners such as DHLAB at EPFL, the University of Lausanne, and the University of Zürich. The project is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) and the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR), and leverages a unique corpus of multilingual newspaper and radio archives. Using machine learning, the project aims to transform the processing, semantic enrichment, representation, exploration, and study of historical media collections across modalities, languages, and national borders.

The successful candidate will conduct original, data-driven historical research on the theme of "media influences," develop computational research methods using Impresso's extensive corpus, and contribute to the design of the Impresso Web App and Datalab. The role also involves creating an interactive notebook based on a research case study for publication on the Impresso Datalab. The position offers a dynamic, inclusive, and multilingual environment, with staff from over 90 countries and strong links to professional sectors and the Luxembourg labour market.

Applicants must hold a PhD in history or a related field, or a PhD in computer science with experience in historical research. Essential qualifications include demonstrable experience in humanities research using computational methods, fluency in English, and the ability to work methodically and effectively. Additional assets are knowledge of programming (preferably Python), machine learning (especially representation learning), familiarity with media history debates, and experience with historical newspaper and radio data.

The position is a fixed-term contract for 6 months, full-time (40 hours per week), based at the Belval Campus. The planned start date is 1 September 2026. The yearly gross salary is EUR 85,176. Applications should be submitted online through the University of Luxembourg HR system by 1st July 2026, including a CV, cover letter, PhD diploma or expected defense date, transcript of university-level courses, and a list of publications. Early applications are encouraged as they will be processed upon reception. The university promotes an inclusive culture and encourages applications from individuals of all backgrounds.

For further information, candidates may contact Assistant Professor Marten Düring. Please note that applications by email will not be considered.
