About this position

Leiden University College (LUC) at Leiden University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher position focused on ecosystem services and livelihoods, embedded within the transdisciplinary Peace and Conservation of Ecology at Disputed Seas (PaCE) project. This project aims to explore the transformative potential of peacebuilding for safeguarding biodiversity and improving local livelihoods in highly disputed areas, particularly the South China Sea/West Philippine Sea (SCS/WPS).

The successful candidate will investigate the interdependencies between biodiversity, socioeconomic development, and human well-being. Key responsibilities include examining the SCS/WPS's role in socio-economic development, disaggregating ecosystem service flows and equity for countries with claims on the SCS/WPS, and assessing the historical and current impacts of geopolitical conflict on local livelihoods. The postdoc will also contribute to stakeholder workshops designed to foster science diplomacy for biodiversity conservation and will be responsible for developing field research protocols and engaging in local community outreach.

The position is based at Leiden University College The Hague, an international English-language Honours College renowned for its innovative Liberal Arts and Science programme addressing global challenges. LUC is part of the Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs (FGGA), a dynamic and diverse faculty with a strong commitment to teaching, research, and student-centered education.

Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent in a relevant discipline such as sustainability science, development studies, social environmental science, social sciences, human geography, environmental geography, or marine social science. Expertise in ecosystem services, livelihood analysis, gender analysis, equity, marine social analysis, resilience, and social-ecological systems is required. Strong quantitative and qualitative research skills, excellent English communication, and experience in field work (with willingness to spend time in the Philippines and/or Vietnam) are essential. The ability to work in intercultural and interdisciplinary settings is necessary, and mixed methods experience or fluency in Tagalog/Filipino/Vietnamese is desirable.

This is a temporary, full-time position (1.0 FTE, 24 months) with potential for extension, offering a competitive salary (€3,546–€5,538 gross per month), holiday allowance, end-of-year bonus, pension scheme, full reimbursement of public transport commuting costs, paid parental leave, flexible and hybrid working options, home-working allowance, laptop, and additional benefits. Leiden University values diversity and inclusion, providing equal opportunities and support for professional growth.

Applications must be submitted online by 12 April 2026. Required documents include a CV (with publications), cover letter, a document detailing how you meet the criteria, and contact details for at least two referees. Shortlisted candidates will participate in two interview rounds. For further information, contact Dr. Aisa O. Manlosa at [email protected]. For details on working conditions and diversity policy, visit the university's website.
