About this position

This postdoctoral position in the Structural Geology and Tectonics Group at ETH Zürich, led by Professor Whitney Behr, offers a unique opportunity to conduct experimental research on the rheology of eclogites—high-pressure metamorphic rocks that play a critical role in subduction zone dynamics and deep crustal processes. The successful candidate will lead a project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, aiming to deliver the first high-pressure/high-temperature calibration of eclogite diffusion-creep behavior.

The research will involve designing and conducting deformation experiments using a newly installed Griggs-type apparatus capable of reaching pressures of 3 GPa or higher in the Rock Physics and Mechanics Laboratory. The postdoc will quantify the mechanical behavior of eclogite, derive flow-law parameters, and integrate microstructural data from advanced analytical techniques such as EBSD, EDS, microprobe, FTIR, and micro-CT. Complementary field sampling and microstructural comparisons will be conducted in Norway’s Western Gneiss Region to validate experimental results against natural samples.

The position is for three years and includes full ETH Zürich employee benefits. Applicants should have a PhD in Earth Sciences or a closely related field, with experience in high-pressure/high-temperature rock deformation experiments and familiarity with relevant microstructural and analytical tools.

The group values diversity, sustainability, and an inclusive working environment. Applications must be submitted online and should include a PhD degree, a CV (maximum three pages), and contact information for two referees.

For further information about the group or the position, candidates may contact Mrs. Perscheng Assef (no applications via email). ETH Zürich is a world-leading institution in science and technology, offering a dynamic and interdisciplinary research environment in the heart of Europe.
