About this position

This postdoctoral position at Karolinska Institutet offers an exciting opportunity to lead research projects in the Hematopoietic Stem Cell Biology Group under Professor Sten Eirik W. Jacobsen. The focus is on genetic fate mapping of normal mouse and human hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), utilizing DNA mutations for clonal lineage tracing. The research is supported by major grants from the Swedish Research Council, the Swedish Cancer Society, and the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, ensuring robust funding and resources.

The Jacobsen lab is internationally recognized for its work on the commitment pathways that govern lineage fate decisions from HSCs to mature blood cells. Research is conducted using genetic mouse models, healthy human subjects, and studies of myeloid malignancies. Key technologies include genetic/mutational clonal fate-mapping, advanced flow cytometry, whole genome DNA sequencing for clonal analysis, and a variety of in vitro and in vivo stem cell assays. The successful candidate will apply DNA sequencing analysis and phylogenetic methods similar to those used in recent high-impact publications from the group.

Projects will be based at both the Center for Hematology and Regenerative Medicine (HERM) and the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology (CMB), providing access to state-of-the-art facilities and a highly collaborative research environment. The lab maintains strong collaborations within Karolinska Institutet and with international partners, offering the postdoctoral researcher a dynamic network for scientific exchange.

Applicants should have a PhD degree, ideally awarded within five years of the application deadline, and substantial experience in advanced DNA sequencing analysis. Required skills include proficiency in computational programming (bash, Python, R), Unix/Linux command-line interface, and bioinformatics pipelines for DNA sequencing data analysis (variant calling, quality control, data processing). A strong publication record in genetics, particularly clonal tracking, and training in leading international laboratories are essential. Excellent English communication skills and the ability to stay current in the field are also required.

Karolinska Institutet is one of the world's leading medical universities, offering a creative and inspiring environment with wide-ranging expertise. The university is committed to equal opportunity and a discrimination-free workplace. The position is full-time and temporary, based in Huddinge and Solna, Stockholm County, Sweden. Monthly salary is provided, and the successful candidate will benefit from the university's collective agreement and employee benefits.

To apply, submit your application via the Varbi recruitment system, including a cover letter (maximum one page), CV, publication list, and contact details for three references. All documents must be in English or Swedish. The application deadline is December 15, 2025.

For further information, contact Anna Heinerö (HR-partner), Dimitra Vasileiadi (Project Coordinator), or the listed union representatives. Join Karolinska Institutet and contribute to groundbreaking research in hematopoietic stem cell biology and better health for all.

Funding details

Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
