About this position

The Bureau de Recherches Géologiques et Minières (BRGM) is offering a postdoctoral research position in hydrogeology and coastal risks, based in Pessac, France. This opportunity is part of the DUNES research programme, specifically Module 3 – Coastal Hydrosystem – within the 'Espace des transitions' initiative. The programme aims to advance geological knowledge and address environmental challenges through innovative, multidisciplinary projects with societal impact.

The research focuses on the characterization and functioning of coastal hydrosystems, particularly those affected by saltwater intrusion. Two primary study sites are involved: the Cap-Ferret sand spit, influenced by dual marine forces between the Atlantic Ocean and Arcachon Basin, and Hossegor in Landes, characterized by a coastal salt lake and shallow aquifers crucial for local drinking water supply. The project seeks to improve understanding of saline intrusion dynamics, spatial distribution, and geometry, which are currently poorly documented.

Key responsibilities include conducting geophysical and hydrogeological data acquisition campaigns, developing conceptual and numerical hydrodynamic models (2D) that account for density effects, and simulating both short-term (tidal and wave influences) and long-term (climate change, anthropogenic pressures) dynamics. The research will support improved management of coastal groundwater systems and contribute to the broader understanding of environmental change impacts.

Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent in environmental science or a related field. Essential skills include hydrogeological modelling, data analysis, GIS proficiency, and programming (Matlab, Python, or R). Knowledge of geochemistry, especially isotopics, is advantageous. The successful candidate will join a dynamic, multidisciplinary team and benefit from a collaborative work environment, opportunities for skill development, and resources for career advancement. BRGM offers a healthy work-life balance, teleworking options, and a supportive atmosphere, recognized by the HRS4R label.

The position is funded with a 13-month salary, paid time off (RTT), meal vouchers, and vacation and leisure benefits. The contract is temporary and full-time. The application deadline is 14 June 2026. Interested candidates should apply via the BRGM recruitment portal, ensuring their application highlights relevant skills and experience. For more information, visit the BRGM website or the Euraxess position link.
