About this position

The Membrane and Interfacial Science Lab at ETH Zürich, within the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering (D-MAVT), is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to advance next-generation membrane processes. The group focuses on designing materials and processes for energy-efficient and sustainable separations, with research spanning membrane synthesis, experimental characterization, and transport modeling. Key application areas include carbon capture, gas separations, and water purification.

The postdoctoral researcher will lead and develop research activities related to membrane performance in gas and liquid separations, fabrication and characterization of nanoporous and polymeric materials, and theoretical/computational modeling of transport and energy efficiency. Additional responsibilities include supervision and mentoring of doctoral and master’s students, preparation of scientific manuscripts, and contribution to research proposals. The position offers opportunities to collaborate with industrial partners and participate in national research initiatives such as NCCR Separations.

Applicants must have a PhD in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, or a closely related field, with demonstrated experience in membrane science, material fabrication, or transport modeling. Excellent English communication skills and motivation to work both independently and collaboratively are essential. The lab provides access to state-of-the-art research infrastructure, international scientific networks, and support for publishing and presenting at major conferences. ETH Zürich offers competitive salary and social benefits, scientific mentoring, professional development, and flexibility to develop your own research direction within the project framework.

ETH Zürich is renowned for its commitment to diversity, sustainability, and excellence in science and technology. The university fosters an inclusive culture, values equality of opportunity, and provides an environment where all staff and students can thrive. The start date for the position is flexible, ideally in spring or summer 2026, and applications are evaluated on a rolling basis.

To apply, submit your application online via the ETH Zürich portal, including your CV, cover letter, references, and academic transcripts. For questions, contact Prof. Anthony Straub at [email protected]. More information about the Membrane and Interfacial Science Lab is available on the university website.
