About this position
Ghent University invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher position in Multimodal AI for Data-Driven Prostate Cancer Radiotherapy. This FWO-funded project aims to advance the personalisation of prostate cancer radiotherapy by leveraging multimodal data and computational methodologies. The research is embedded in an ongoing clinical trial at Ghent University Hospital and is supervised by a multidisciplinary team including Prof. Brent van der Heyden, Prof. Valérie Fonteyne (radiation oncologist), and Dr. Evelien Bogaert (medical physics expert), with close collaboration from Prof. Ioulia Tzouvadaki (nanotechnology) and Prof. Mieke Adriaens (electrochemistry).
The successful candidate will design, implement, and validate AI-based multimodal data processing algorithms to support personalised radiotherapy, integrating imaging, clinical, and treatment data into predictive and decision-support models. The role also involves contributing to the development of valorisation pathways for biosensing and software solutions, facilitating clinical translation, technology maturation, stakeholder engagement, and preparation of funding applications in collaboration with the principal investigator.
Applicants must hold a thesis-based PhD or be in the final year of their PhD with expertise in one or more of the following areas: multimodal data processing, medical image analysis, biosensing, artificial intelligence, radiotherapy, or predictive medicine. Candidates should demonstrate an entrepreneurial mindset and motivation to translate research innovations into clinical applications, spin-offs, or collaborative initiatives. English proficiency at a minimum C1 level (CEFR) or equivalent is required, evidenced by a recognised certificate or prior academic/professional experience in an English-speaking environment. Proficiency in Dutch is considered an asset for communication with patient organisations and society-facing stakeholders. Strong communication and public speaking skills are expected.
The position offers a contract of definite duration for 22 months, starting as early as 15 June 2026. Remuneration is determined by salary scale PD1 to PD4 (doctoral degree). Ghent University provides a comprehensive benefits package, including training and education opportunities, 36 days of holiday leave (for full-time staff), annual fixed bridge days, bicycle allowance, and eco vouchers.
To apply, candidates must submit their application online via the Ghent University e-recruitment system before the deadline of 31 May 2026. Required documents include a CV and academic transcript (merged into one PDF), a cover letter in PDF format (prepared without generative AI), and a transcript of the required degree (with translation if not in Dutch, French, German, or English). The selection process consists of an initial screening based on submitted documents, followed by online interviews for shortlisted candidates. For further information, contact Prof. Brent van der Heyden at [email protected]. Please note that applications sent by email will not be considered.
This opportunity is ideal for candidates seeking to contribute to cutting-edge research in biomedical engineering, medical science, and computer science, with a focus on clinical translation and innovation in cancer radiotherapy.
