About this position
The Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher position in the Pluripotency for Organ Regeneration Research Group, as part of the TERAV+ Project. This opportunity is based in Barcelona, Spain, and offers a stimulating interdisciplinary environment at one of Europe’s leading bioengineering research centers.
The main objective of the position is to develop robust and reproducible human organoid models to study tissue development and genetic and systemic disease conditions. The successful candidate will work on the development of renal, cardiac, and neural derivatives from human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) in both 2D and 3D cell culture settings, utilizing engineering approaches to establish controlled microenvironments. Additional responsibilities include genome engineering of hPSCs to model disease mechanisms and implementing quantitative and qualitative assays to monitor molecular and metabolic changes, as well as cell-cell interactions during organoid development.
Applicants must hold a PhD in biology, biotechnology, biomedical engineering, biomedicine, or related fields. Essential skills include proven experience in hPSC culture and differentiation, methodologies for deriving hPSC-organoids, confocal microscopy, quantitative image analysis, and molecular biology techniques. Experience in bioengineering technologies such as microfabrication, biomaterials, and organ-on-chip approaches is required. A high level of English proficiency is necessary. Advantageous skills include custom script development for image processing and quantification, and experience with CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing. Candidates should demonstrate competencies in communication, teamwork, collaboration, commitment, proactivity, integrity, and critical and analytical thinking.
The position is funded through an EU programme and offers a full-time, open-ended contract linked to the project and budget duration. IBEC provides a range of benefits, including paid holidays, leave days for personal matters, parental leave, flexible working hours, mobility grants, and access to a mentoring programme. The institute is committed to equal opportunity, diversity, and inclusion, actively encouraging female candidates for senior positions and offering support services such as babysitting during interviews for candidates with children relocating to Barcelona.
IBEC is recognized as a Severo Ochoa Research Centre for excellence and is located within the Barcelona Science Park. The institute manages extensive facilities and supports a diverse team of researchers from over 35 countries. IBEC’s mission is to advance high-quality interdisciplinary research in bioengineering and nanomedicine, contributing to improved health and quality of life.
Applications must be submitted online via the IBEC application portal by 24 May 2026. Only applications received before the deadline will be considered. For further information or questions, candidates may contact [email protected]. Reference code PD-EG should be used in the application. Additional details about the position and IBEC can be found on the institute’s website.
