About this position
The Center for Theoretical Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences (CFT PAS) in Warsaw is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to join the Quantum Computational Advantage Group within the newly established Center for Quantum-Enabled Computing. This group, led by Professor Michał Oszmaniec, focuses on advancing the frontier of quantum computational advantage, aiming to develop verifiable, energy-efficient, reliable, and scalable quantum computing systems. The project is funded by the Foundation for Polish Science and co-financed by the European Union under the European Funds for Smart Economy 2021-2027 (FENG).
The research agenda is centered on three main goals: (i) randomized implementation of quantum operations and circuits to improve performance and reduce hardware requirements for near-term quantum devices, (ii) verification of quantum advantage on realistic hardware platforms such as superconducting qubits, trapped ions, Rydberg atoms, and photonic processors, and (iii) exploring applications and limitations of quantum advantage schemes, including certified randomness generation, generative machine learning, and quantum chemistry. The group also investigates whether quantum advantage protocols can inspire improved classical algorithms.
Successful candidates will contribute to analytical and numerical research tasks, co-supervise PhD and undergraduate students, disseminate results through publications and presentations, and participate in the scientific life of the institute, including seminars and colloquia. The Center for Quantum-Enabled Computing is the first scientific unit in Poland dedicated to quantum effects in computing, offering a creative, innovative, and friendly work environment with opportunities for collaboration with top institutes in quantum information theory.
The position offers a competitive salary (12,980–14,660 PLN gross per month, approx. 9,700–11,000 PLN net), full social security and health insurance, funds for participation in scientific events, research visits, access to computational resources, and subsidies for leisure and childcare. Flexible working hours and a diverse, inclusive culture are emphasized. The initial contract is for one year, with the possibility of extension until the end of 2029 based on performance.
Applicants must hold a PhD in physics or a closely related discipline, obtained no earlier than 2021 (with possible extensions for documented interruptions or parental leave). If the PhD is not yet awarded, a supervisor’s statement confirming the planned defense date is required. Candidates should have a strong command of English, deep knowledge of quantum physics, quantum information, and quantum computing, and familiarity with advanced mathematical methods such as representation theory, functional analysis, and concentration of measure. Motivation, teamwork, openness to collaboration, and experience supervising students are valued.
To apply, send your application to [email protected] by 15 June 2026, including the reference number MAB/14/2026 in the subject line. Required documents are a CV, cover letter, recommendation letter, and proof of PhD or supervisor’s statement. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted and invited for an interview, which may be held online or at the Center. For further details, visit the project website or the institute website.
The CFT PAS is committed to equality, diversity, and inclusion, providing a safe and supportive environment for all members of its scientific community. Regulations for reporting violations and protection of whistleblowers are in place. The institute is located at Aleja Lotników 32/46, Warsaw, Poland.
