About this position

Applications are open for a Postdoctoral Researcher position on the ERC-funded MAKEBELIEF project at the Meertens Institute, part of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences in Amsterdam, Netherlands. This interdisciplinary project investigates how immersive media, such as theme parks, shape religion, cultural heritage, and national identity, with a particular focus on 'imagineering' religion in China through case studies like the Oriental Buddha Park.

The successful candidate will conduct research at the intersection of religion, media, and identity, employing methods such as historical analysis, digital ethnography, and fieldwork. Collaboration with an international research team and the opportunity to develop independent case studies are key aspects of the role. The position is supervised by leading scholar Ernst van den Hemel.

Applicants should hold a PhD in Religious Studies, Anthropology, Media or Cultural Studies, possess strong research and writing skills, and demonstrate proficiency in English and/or Dutch. Interest in religion, heritage, and media is essential. Mandarin or Cantonese language skills and experience with ethnographic research are advantageous.

The position offers a competitive salary (€4,728 – €6,433/month for 0.7 FTE), a 3-year contract, up to 41 days of leave per year, hybrid working options, pension (ABP), and additional allowances. The Meertens Institute provides a vibrant humanities research environment in central Amsterdam.

To apply, submit your CV, motivation letter, and a 1-page research statement via the official application portal by 6 April 2026. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research on global religion, identity, and media.
