About this position

The Microbial Ecology Group at the Institute of Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Biology, Jagiellonian University in Kraków is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to join their team. The research focuses on cellular dormancy (quiescence) in eukaryotic microorganisms, with a particular emphasis on baker's yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). The project aims to uncover cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying phenotypic variability in quiescent cell populations and their effects on adaptation, antifungal resistance, and population dynamics.

The successful candidate will lead the development and application of advanced microscopy techniques, microfluidic approaches, and single-cell analysis methods to investigate quiescence at both individual cell and population levels. The position offers access to state-of-the-art equipment and platforms for microscopy and microfluidics, as well as mentorship from experienced researchers and opportunities for international collaboration.

Applicants must hold a PhD in Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, or a related field, obtained no earlier than seven years ago. Essential qualifications include proficiency in fluorescence microscopy (confocal, wide-field, live-cell), experience with microscopy-microfluidic systems or single-cell analysis, strong image analysis skills, independent research ability, and excellent analytical and critical thinking skills. Candidates should also have experience managing experimental data, proficiency in scientific writing, mentoring experience, and strong organizational skills. Desirable qualifications include expertise in yeast biology or eukaryotic microbiology, knowledge of cell biology and cellular metabolism, flow cytometry experience, programming skills, mathematical modeling capabilities, publications in high-impact journals, and grant writing experience.

Employment benefits include a competitive salary (11,095–13,314 PLN gross per month plus 3–20% seniority allowance), a full-time contract for 12 months (extendable to 20 months), research funding for conferences, and access to modern laboratory facilities. Social benefits cover vacation subsidies, childcare, group insurance, sports access, and medical care packages. The position is ideal for early-career researchers seeking to establish an independent research profile within a vibrant international group.

The application deadline is 6 June 2026. To apply, submit your documents to [email protected], ensuring you meet all formal requirements and include evidence of scientific achievements and relevant experience. Download and complete the internal application form. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview, which may be conducted online or in person. The selection process follows the Policy of Open, Transparent and Merit-Based Recruitment Process at Jagiellonian University.
