About this position
The Social Transitions Research Group (STR) at the Department of Social Sciences, University of Basel, is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher (60%) to join its dynamic team. Led by Professor Max Bergman, STR investigates the dynamics of sustainable transitions at the intersection of society, governance, and technology. The group’s research, particularly through the Proof of Transition Concepts (proTract) program, focuses on real-world cases of successful sustainability transitions, examining how public, private, and civil society actors generate socially and ecologically positive outcomes. The aim is to produce theoretically grounded, context-sensitive, and actionable research that advances understanding of social change and innovation.
STR is recognized for its methodological development in qualitative and mixed methods research, case study research, transdisciplinary designs, and real-world labs. The group is embedded in a European research network and actively contributes to collaborative sustainability research within Eucor, The European Campus—a trinational alliance of five universities in the Upper Rhine region (Basel, Freiburg, Haute-Alsace, Strasbourg, and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology). The successful candidate will engage in sustainability research and activities within Eucor, including joint projects, teaching initiatives, and academic exchanges across member universities.
The position starts on 1 August 2026 and is limited to six years (2 + 4 years). Responsibilities include collaborating on research projects, project development, and publications; teaching one course per semester (2 hours per week); contributing to research methods training and participatory approaches, with a focus on transdisciplinary research and real-world labs; engaging with students and administration; and contributing to STR’s academic culture and identity.
Applicants must hold a completed doctorate in sociology, sustainability studies, or science and technology studies (STS) with a focus on the social sciences. Outstanding candidates nearing completion of their doctorate may also be considered. Candidates should demonstrate theoretical and/or empirical interests in sustainability, social change, and innovation, and have experience or interest in participatory research methods. International research experience, ideally in a European context, and familiarity with cross-border, multilingual research environments are preferred. Excellent language skills in English AND either German or French (speaking and writing) are required.
The University of Basel offers membership in a dynamic and productive research team, opportunities to expand skills and knowledge, access to an active national and international research network, and a well-equipped workplace in the center of Basel. The position provides generous remuneration according to the University of Basel pay scale.
Applications should be submitted by 7 July 2026 via the University of Basel’s online recruiting tool. Required documents include a cover letter stating main research interests and experiences, a CV with references, and two writing samples. For further information, contact Professor Max Bergman at [email protected]. Women and minorities are especially encouraged to apply.
