About this position
Utrecht University is advertising a postdoctoral researcher position in the Science of Hybrid Intelligence within the Department of Information and Computing Sciences at the Faculty of Science. The role sits in the Responsible AI group and the Hybrid Intelligence Centre, working on a project that aims to design AI systems that keep humans at the center of decision-making.
The research focus is on Hybrid Intelligence, combining human and machine intelligence to support meaningful actions while accounting for ethical, legal, and societal values. The postdoc will contribute to two main goals: (1) helping shape Hybrid Intelligence as an internationally recognized research area by designing metrics, building a runtime computational framework, analyzing interactions in hybrid teams, and creating benchmarks and technical competitions; and (2) evaluating methods developed across the broader HI programme, working closely with consortium members and contributing to research meetings and co-authored papers.
This opportunity is especially relevant for candidates with interests in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Human-AI Teaming, benchmarking platforms, agentic frameworks, real-time simulation platforms, and user studies. The post explicitly seeks applicants with a PhD in a computational field, strong programming skills, experience developing AI solutions, and strong English communication skills. Experience with benchmarking platforms (for example in reinforcement learning or robotics) is listed as a plus.
The position is 1.0 FTE for one year with the possibility of a two-year extension after positive evaluation, and it is available immediately with a preferred start as soon as possible. Salary is between €3,546 and €5,538 gross per month depending on experience, plus holiday pay, year-end bonus, pension, and other employment benefits. The project is funded by a 10-year Gravitation Grant from the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science.
The application deadline is 13 May 2026. Applicants should submit a motivation letter, CV, at least two references, and proof of PhD completion or expected defense date through the university application portal.
