About this position
The Energy Science Center (ESC) at ETH Zürich is seeking a highly qualified and motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to join its interdisciplinary team working at the forefront of hybrid AI-optimization modelling. This position is embedded within the Nexus-e group, with close collaboration with the ETH AI Center and the Reliability and Risk Engineering Lab. The research focus is on designing AI-based surrogates for large-scale energy system models, aiming to advance the development of high-fidelity emulators for energy system optimization.
As a Postdoctoral Researcher, you will lead the design and implementation of innovative methods such as Kriging surrogate, Polynomial Chaos Expansion (PCE), and Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs). You will contribute to the strategic direction of research, publish high-impact results in leading journals, and present findings at international conferences in energy systems and machine learning. The role also involves collaboration with industry partners to address practical challenges in energy system modelling.
Applicants must hold a PhD or Doctoral degree in Energy Systems, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or a related field focused on the intersection of machine learning and optimization. Proven expertise in surrogate modelling, especially in designing neural architectures for emulating constrained optimization problems, is essential. Advanced programming skills in Python, including experience with PyTorch, Pyomo, and scientific libraries (Xarray, Pandas), are required; MATLAB knowledge is desirable but not mandatory. A strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals involving advanced emulation or physics-aware AI is expected. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to work effectively in interdisciplinary and multicultural teams bridging data science and energy engineering. Proficiency in English is required.
ETH Zürich offers a dynamic and interdisciplinary research environment, competitive salaries according to ETH standards, numerous benefits, and flexible, family-friendly working conditions. The initial contract is for one year, with the possibility of extension based on continued funding and successful performance. ETH Zürich values diversity, sustainability, and equality of opportunity, fostering an inclusive culture and climate-neutral future.
To apply, submit your application online via the ETH application portal. Required documents include a letter of motivation (maximum one page), CV with publications, and two key outputs (publications, code, or projects). Applications via email or postal services will not be considered. For further information, contact Dr. Jonas Savelsberg, Head of the Nexus-e group, at [email protected].
ETH Zürich is one of the world’s leading universities specializing in science and technology, renowned for excellent education, cutting-edge research, and direct transfer of new knowledge into society. Located in Zurich, Switzerland, ETH Zürich provides a vibrant environment for independent thinking and academic excellence, addressing global challenges in energy, technology, and sustainability.
