Description

The iSearch Lab at the Technical University of Munich, led by Prof. Dr. Dr. Azzurra Ruggeri, is recruiting a Doctoral Candidate or Postdoctoral Researcher to join its internationally recognized team. The lab focuses on understanding how children and adults actively seek, select, and evaluate information to learn about the world, employing behavioral, computational, and cross-cultural research methods. Key research areas include curiosity, exploration, reasoning, ecological active learning, and decision-making, with a strong emphasis on how learners interact with their environments to acquire knowledge and make decisions. This open-topic position allows the successful candidate to develop and conduct independent research within the lab’s broad thematic areas, such as active learning, information search, decision-making, and cognition from a developmental perspective. The lab offers a creative and supportive environment, access to high-quality training, networking opportunities, and career development support. The position is full-time and based in Munich, Germany, with a contract duration of 36 months for doctoral candidates and 24–36 months for postdoctoral researchers. Salary is provided according to TV-L E13 (doctoral candidate at 65%, postdoc at 100%), with full social security and pension coverage. VISA and relocation support are available. Applicants must have, or expect to obtain, the relevant degree in Psychology, Cognitive Science, or a closely related field before the start date. Excellent English skills, the ability to work independently, and willingness to relocate to Munich are required. Experience with behavioral coding, statistical methods, programming (R, Python), and online data collection (Qualtrics) is desirable. The application process is open to all nationalities and is committed to diversity and inclusion. The position is suitable for disabled persons, and the recruitment process adheres to the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers. To apply, candidates should submit certificates, CV, cover letter (including a research proposal), and two reference letters to lab.isearch@sot.tum.de by 23 November 2025. Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed in early December, with final decisions by late December. For further information, candidates may contact Fatma Sila Cakmak or Dr. Laura Schlingloff-Nemecz. The iSearch Lab provides a multidisciplinary perspective, integrating insights from developmental and cognitive psychology, philosophy, education, information theory, and computational modeling to shed light on the cognitive, social, and cultural mechanisms underlying active and ecological learning.
