About this position

The Environmental Chemistry group at ETH Zürich, in collaboration with the Department of Environmental Chemistry at Eawag, invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher position focused on the environmental fate of synthetic water-soluble polymers (WS/DPs). This joint initiative aims to advance the fundamental understanding of how these widely used polymers, present in home care and cosmetic products, interact with both engineered and natural environments. The project will investigate key processes such as adsorption to solid–water interfaces, which are critical for understanding the transport and (bio)availability of these polymers in soils, sediments, sludge, and model mineral/organic surfaces.

As a postdoctoral researcher, you will conduct high-throughput batch adsorption experiments under varying solution chemistries, perform column transport experiments to assess polymer mobility, and use in-situ surface measurements to determine adsorbed concentrations and conformational dynamics. High-resolution mass spectrometry will be applied to quantify polymer residues in solution. The research will focus on developing structure–adsorption relationships by linking polymer and sorbent properties to experimental data, providing mechanistic insights that support model development and inform regulatory frameworks. The work will be conducted at both ETH Zürich and Eawag, offering access to state-of-the-art facilities and a vibrant, international research environment.

Applicants should hold a PhD in environmental, polymer, organic, colloid, surface, or material chemistry or a related field, and must be proficient in English. Essential competencies include motivation for fundamental experimental research, teamwork, effective communication, commitment to co-advising students, and willingness to engage with regulators and stakeholders. The position is funded for up to two years with a competitive salary and includes benefits such as public transport season tickets, car sharing, sports facilities, childcare, and attractive pension options. ETH Zürich values diversity, sustainability, and an inclusive culture, providing professional development opportunities and a supportive environment for all staff and students.

The application process requires submission of a single PDF containing a cover letter, CV, PhD/MSc records, publication list, research statement (1–2 pages), and contact details for three references via the ETH Zürich online application portal. Applications via email or postal services will not be considered. Evaluation of applications will begin on 10 January 2026. For further information, prospective applicants may contact Prof. Dr. Michael Sander at [email protected].

ETH Zürich is a world-leading university in science and technology, renowned for its excellent education, cutting-edge research, and commitment to societal impact. Join a diverse and dynamic team working to address global environmental challenges through innovative research.
