Postdoctoral Researcher – REVENANT (Revivals of Empire: Nostalgia, Amnesia, Tribulation) Research Group, ERC Consolidator Grant University of Rijeka in Croatia

The University of Rijeka, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, invites applications for a full-time postdoctoral researcher position as a member of the REVENANT (Revivals of Empire: Nostalgia, Amnesia, Tribulation) Research Group, supported by the European Research Council (ERC) Consolidator Grant #101002908 under Horizon 2020. The REVENANT project investigates the legacies, memory, and cultural dynamics of empire, with a particular focus on the Russian Empire and post-Soviet heritage. The research group is interdisciplinary, drawing on ethnology, anthropology, art history, contemporary history, comparative literature, and cultural studies to explore nostalgia, amnesia, and tribulation in post-imperial contexts.

The successful candidate will conduct research aligned with the project's objectives, including transnational fieldwork and analysis of cultural, historical, and literary phenomena related to the Russian Empire and its aftermath. The position is based in Rijeka, Croatia, and offers a fixed-term contract with salary and benefits in accordance with Croatian regulations and ERC funding guidelines. The role requires active participation in scientific research, excellent English language skills, and the ability to conduct research in several countries associated with the project.

Applicants must hold a PhD in the humanities (ethnology, anthropology, art history, history, literature, or a closely related field) and have at least four years of relevant research experience. Expertise in the geographical and historical context of the Russian Empire or post-Soviet heritage is essential. Candidates educated outside Croatia must obtain recognition of their foreign degree from the Agency for Science and Higher Education before employment. Compliance with Croatian residency regulations is required for the duration of the project.
