About this position
The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher / Senior AI Engineer in Cardiovascular Image Segmentation, focusing on echocardiography and CT/CMR. This full-time, 12-month position is based at the Cardiovascular Research Institute (CVRI) in Dublin and Mater Private Hospital, and is central to the CroíValve (DUO MAX) project. The role aims to develop, train, validate, and document deep-learning image segmentation and quantification models for tricuspid valve anatomy and regurgitation assessment using TTE/TEE imaging, with integration of CT/CMR-derived anatomy where available.
As part of Prof. Osama Soliman’s lab, the successful candidate will architect end-to-end AI solutions, manage project milestones, liaise with consortium partners, and develop advanced statistical and machine learning models for risk prediction using longitudinal clinical and imaging data. Responsibilities include implementing clustering algorithms for patient subtyping, collaborating with clinical and imaging teams, and preparing scientific reports and presentations for high-impact journals and conferences.
RCSI is renowned for its commitment to research excellence, translational biomedical and clinical research, and fostering collaboration with industry. The institution supports researchers with developmental opportunities and a vibrant, inclusive community. RCSI ranks first globally for “Good Health and Well-being” in the Times Higher Education SDG Impact Rankings and offers a range of employee benefits, including health and wellbeing support, flexible working arrangements, family leave, pension schemes, discounted services, and professional growth opportunities.
Applicants must hold a PhD in Data Science, Biostatistics, Artificial Intelligence, or a related quantitative field, with extensive post-PhD research or industrial experience. Essential skills include hands-on medical image segmentation expertise, cardiovascular imaging experience (preferably echocardiography/TEE/TTE or cardiac CT/CMR), deep-learning implementation (strong PyTorch required), end-to-end model development, and reproducibility practices. Preferred experience includes echocardiography segmentation, structural heart disease, artefact-robust imaging models, DICOM/PACS workflows, and publications in leading journals. Leadership experience and specialized knowledge in multi-objective optimization and time-series analysis are desirable.
Visa sponsorship is available for candidates who meet the essential criteria. The position is funded through an EU programme, with remuneration aligned to the IUA Researchers PDR salary scale. Employee benefits include health and wellbeing support, family leave, pension, discounted services, and professional development. Garda vetting and occupational health review may be required.
To apply, submit your CV and cover letter online via the RCSI careers portal by the closing date of 14 June 2026. Informal enquiries can be directed to Amy Carswell at [email protected]. Proof of eligibility documentation will be required at a later stage. RCSI is an equal opportunity employer, committed to diversity and inclusion.
