About this position

Postdoctoral Scholar opportunity at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin, within the Department Artifacts, Action, Knowledge led by Dagmar Schäfer. The project focuses on migratory expertise and practices of knowledge transmission, with a strong emphasis on the history of educational experiences connected to migration trajectories.

The research agenda is especially interested in intersectional approaches to how economic mobility and gender shape educational experiences of Asian immigrants in East and Southeast Asia over the longue durée, and how these compare with more contemporary forms of community-building and knowledge transmission among Asian peoples in Europe. The post also highlights a subfocus on disaster studies.

This is a two-year postdoctoral employment position with an employment contract, paid at TVöD-Bund E13. The institute is part of the Max Planck Society and offers an international research environment, interdisciplinary exchange, and standard employment benefits.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should have a completed PhD by the start date in a relevant field such as history, history of science, migration studies, geography, science studies, or related humanities fields. The role expects solid empirical research skills, experience in migration/diaspora or knowledge-related research, familiarity with Asian and European history, publication experience, and excellent English and German. Knowledge of a relevant regional language is also desirable.

Application deadline: 2026-06-07 at 23:59 CEST. Applications must be submitted electronically through the application portal only.
