About this position
The University of Antwerp invites applications for a full-time postdoctoral scholarship holder in statistical shape modelling within the Department of Physics, Faculty of Sciences. This position is part of the imec-Visionlab research group, focusing on advancing personalized musculoskeletal care by transforming routine imaging data, such as 2D X-rays and surface scans, into detailed 3D and 4D anatomical models. The project leverages AI models trained on high-end imaging modalities to bridge the gap between routine clinical practice and high-fidelity anatomical analysis, aiming to develop a unified pipeline that integrates generative AI, statistical shape modeling, and biomechanical soft tissue modelling. The goal is to enhance anatomical realism, motion consistency, and clinical interpretability, even with sparse, noisy, or low-resolution input data.
As a postdoctoral researcher, you will assist in ongoing research projects in statistical shape modelling, coordinate project proposals, contribute to attracting external funding, and supervise PhD students. The position offers access to cutting-edge computing infrastructure and motion capture scanning facilities, structured support for career development, and flexible working conditions including hybrid work and a collaborative culture. The preferred start date is June 1, 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter.
Applicants must hold a PhD in physics, mathematics, engineering, or computer science from a non-Belgian institution (or obtain it by the start date). Required qualifications include a strong background in shape modelling, deep generative modelling (diffusion/transformers), or multimodal representation learning, strong programming skills in Python (preferably with PyTorch experience), and a track record of publishing in top image processing or computer vision journals. Candidates must demonstrate research qualities in line with university policies and be fluent in English.
The scholarship is for 2 years, extendable by 1 year, with a monthly amount calculated according to Contract Research Staff pay scales. Additional benefits include ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance, bicycle allowance or full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting. Most work will be conducted at Campus Drie Eiken in a dynamic and stimulating environment.
To apply, complete the online application form via the University of Antwerp’s job application platform, attaching a motivation letter and academic CV. The selection committee will review applications and notify candidates of decisions. For questions about the job, contact Prof. Dr. Jan Sijbers ([email protected]). The University of Antwerp is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunities, and encourages applications from candidates of all backgrounds.
