About this position

Luleå University of Technology (LTU) is advertising a fully funded postdoctoral scholarship in Fire Technology specializing in Hydrogen Safety. The position is hosted in the Centre for Hydrogen Energy Systems Sweden (CH2ESS) and sits within LTU’s research environment focused on hydrogen use in industrial processes and energy systems.

The project addresses a timely and important topic: risk assessment for the urban integration of hydrogen infrastructure, especially hydrogen pipeline systems in evolving urban environments. The research will involve scenario-based risk assessment, dispersion modelling, and regulatory analysis to support risk-informed urban planning and decision-making. This is a strong fit for candidates interested in hydrogen safety, fire and explosion risk, process safety, and infrastructure resilience.

Eligibility highlights: applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent in fire engineering, safety science/engineering, risk and reliability engineering, process safety, or a closely related field. Strong experience in risk assessment and modelling tools is required, and scientific writing/publication experience is expected. Excellent English communication skills and the ability to work independently in an interdisciplinary setting are also important. Experience with hydrogen safety, gas infrastructure, CFD, standards, and regulatory frameworks is an advantage.

Funding and duration: the scholarship is tax-free, fully funded, and lasts 2 years. The successful candidate will be placed in Luleå, Sweden and must live there for the full period.

Application window: the closing date is 11 June 2026. Applicants should submit a CV, personal letter, and verified diploma copies in English or Swedish, using reference number 3136-2026.

For questions, contact Rhoda Afriyie Mensah or Joakim Sandström at Luleå University of Technology.
