About this position

The Gut Peptide Research lab at KU Leuven, a top-ranked university in Belgium, is offering a postdoctoral position focused on the crosstalk between gut microbiota and intestinal stem cells, specifically in organoids derived from patients with obesity. The research aims to uncover how microbiota such as Akkermansia muciniphila and their metabolites are sensed by chemoreceptors on human intestinal stem cells, influencing stem cell fate decisions and potentially steering differentiation toward mature epithelial cell types that maintain or restore gut health.

This project leverages advanced techniques including RNA-sequencing, super resolution imaging, and metabolic studies in 3D intestinal organoids. The lab is part of the Translational Research Center for Gastrointestinal Disorders (TARGID), which integrates fundamental and clinical expertise in gastroenterology, endocrinology, stem cell biology, and nutrition. The environment is highly dynamic and international, offering excellent opportunities for professional networking and practical experience in translational research.

Responsibilities include designing and executing high-quality experiments, interpreting data, publishing project results, supervising and collaborating with PhD students, technicians, and master students, and communicating research findings at national and international meetings. The position is for two years, with an initial contract of one year, and offers guidance in a multidisciplinary team, support for research proposals, and high-level scientific training.

Applicants must have a PhD in biomedical sciences, bioengineering, biotechnology, pharmaceutical sciences, nutrition, or a related field, with strong academic performance at MSc and PhD levels, first-author publications, proficiency in English, creativity, and the ability to integrate into an international environment. KU Leuven is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunity, and provides support for accessibility and career development.

To apply, send your CV and motivation letter to Prof. Inge Depoortere ([email protected]) and submit your application via the KU Leuven job portal. The deadline for applications is May 22, 2026. For further information about the lab and research center, visit TARGID.
