About this position

This position at Loughborough University offers an exciting opportunity for a Research Associate or Research Assistant to contribute to a pioneering project in circular robotic manufacturing. Based at the Wolfson School of Mechanical, Electrical and Manufacturing Engineering, the role focuses on developing a whole-system circular approach to the design, use, and end-of-life management of industrial robots. The successful candidate will lead efforts to create frameworks for disassembly, refurbishment, remanufacturing, and material recycling of end-of-life robots, supported by AI-based life cycle assessment (LCA) and life cycle costing (LCC) models.

The project is highly interdisciplinary, integrating concepts from circular economy, robotics, artificial intelligence, vision systems, sustainability, and materials engineering. The postholder will collaborate closely with a diverse team of academic and industrial partners, both nationally and internationally, to advance research and disseminate findings. The role is office-based and requires the ability and willingness to travel for 1-3 week visits to project partners.

Applicants should possess a BSc, MSc, or PhD degree (or equivalent) in mechanical, manufacturing, electronic, robotic control engineering, or a related discipline. A strong interest in circular economy, robotics, AI, vision systems, sustainability, remanufacturing, and recycling is essential. The position is fixed term until 31 January 2028, with a competitive salary package: grade 5 from £29,588 or grade 6 from £35,608 per annum, subject to annual pay awards.

Loughborough University is renowned for its vibrant academic community, innovative research, and commitment to societal and environmental challenges. The university offers a range of benefits, including generous holiday allowances, access to world-class facilities, financial wellbeing support, flexible working options, health and wellbeing services, and sustainability initiatives such as electric vehicle and cycle-to-work schemes.

To apply, candidates should use the university's online application portal and review the job description and person specification for the relevant role. Informal enquiries can be directed to Professor Shahin Rahimifard. The university is committed to supporting reasonable adjustments during the recruitment process and on the job.

The application deadline is 1 June 2026. Interviews will be scheduled at a later date. This is a unique opportunity to join a leading institution and contribute to innovative research in circular robotic manufacturing, with significant potential for professional growth and impact.
