About this position
The project 'Reverse Flotation for the Recovery of Spent Lithium Ion Batteries' at Monash University Malaysia addresses the urgent need for sustainable recycling solutions in the context of rising demand for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) driven by consumer electronics. As LIBs reach their end-of-life, effective recycling is crucial to mitigate environmental pollution and recover valuable materials. This research focuses on employing reverse flotation techniques to selectively remove graphite from spent LIBs, thereby retaining lithium-containing cathode materials in the sediment. The process not only supports scalable battery recycling but also aligns with circular economy principles by enabling efficient material recovery and reducing toxic waste.
Supervised by Associate Professor Ee Von Lau and Professor Lian Zhang, the project is situated within the Department of Engineering and Information Technology. It integrates research areas such as environmental chemistry, industrial chemistry, chemical engineering, and mechanical engineering. The successful candidate will join a dynamic research environment dedicated to advancing sustainable waste management and pollution control through innovative chemical and mechanical processes.
Funding for this PhD position includes a 100% tuition fee waiver and a competitive monthly stipend of RM 2,850 under the Graduate Research Excellence Scholarship. Applicants must hold a First Class Honours (H1) degree or its equivalent, demonstrate familiarity with experimental design, and preferably have research experience evidenced by publications or fellowships. English language proficiency as required by Monash University Malaysia is mandatory.
Applications are accepted year-round. Prospective candidates should first contact the main supervisor to discuss their academic background and suitability for the project. If deemed a good fit, applicants are invited to submit an Expression of Interest, including a relevant research proposal. Eligible candidates will be invited to apply for PhD candidature and may be selected for a scholarship interview. Note that the application process will be updated after 4 May 2026, with new instructions available on the project page.
