About this position

Three Senior Research Fellows (Postdoc) positions are open in Public International Law at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law in Heidelberg, Germany.

The postdoctoral fellows will conduct individual research and contribute to common research projects in public international law, with project ideas encouraged around three core themes: cooperation in antagonistic times, empirical foreign relations law, and geographies of international law. Teaching at the law faculty of the University of Heidelberg may be arranged in consultation with the faculty.

This is a 3-year fixed-term paid research position with the possibility of extension under certain conditions. Salary and social benefits follow Max Planck Society and TVöD-Bund regulations. The institute highlights its international research environment, strong academic support, world-leading library, and extensive databases.

Eligibility: applicants must have completed or be close to completing an advanced degree in law (Dr iur, PhD, or SJD) or an equivalent academic qualification. Strong English skills are required; German and/or French are advantageous. Excellent analytical and writing skills and strong motivation for academic work are expected. The position is suitable for candidates seeking postdoctoral qualification work such as a postdoctoral thesis, German Habilitation, or related publications.

Deadline: 15 June 2026. Applications must be submitted exclusively via the online application system with a motivation letter naming possible research ideas (max 1.5 pages), a tabular CV including publications, and certificates.
