About this position

Staff Scientist opportunity at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), Bethesda, Maryland.

The Laboratory of Chromosome Dynamics and Evolution, led by Dr. Takashi Akera, is recruiting a Staff Scientist to join an Evolutionary Cell Biology research program. The lab studies chromosome dynamics, genetics and genomics, cell biology, developmental biology, female meiosis, and the evolutionary consequences of selfish genetic elements using mouse models and other non-model rodents.

This is a stable, long-term, semi-independent research role designed for experienced scientists, especially senior postdocs who prefer hands-on experimentation and mentoring students and postdocs rather than pursuing a PI track. The Staff Scientist will work on multiple projects and contribute to the lab’s research on genetic cheating, transmission bias, reproduction, speciation, and species barriers.

Eligibility highlights: applicants must hold a PhD in cell biology, genetics, or a related field; have a strong background in confocal microscopy, mitosis and meiosis, oocyte/embryo work, or genetics; and demonstrate the ability to work independently while managing multiple projects. A strong publication record from postdoctoral research is required. The posting notes that U.S. citizens and permanent residents are eligible, and NIH welcomes foreign nationals except those on the restricted list referenced in the ad.

How to apply: submit a current CV, a cover letter describing your research experience and interest, and the contact information for three professional references to Dr. Akera at the email provided in the posting. Review the NIH vacancy page for full details and application instructions.
