About this position
The Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres is seeking a motivated Staff Scientist (f/m/x) for a postdoctoral position in Computational Biology at Helmholtz Munich, Neuherberg near Munich, Germany. The position is based in the internationally recognized Theis Lab at the Computational Health Center, which specializes in machine learning, single-cell analysis, and computational modeling of complex biological systems. The lab offers a vibrant interdisciplinary environment, combining fundamental methodological development with translational collaborations in biomedicine.
The successful candidate will drive and support the scientific design, analysis, and interpretation of computational and single-cell biology projects, ensuring high methodological standards, reproducibility, robust workflows, and shared best practices. Responsibilities include contributing to collaborative research initiatives and grants, shaping the lab’s scientific strategy, and providing mentoring and guidance to PhD students and postdocs.
Applicants must have a PhD in computational biology, bioinformatics, computer science, mathematics, biomedical sciences, or a related field. Essential skills include expertise in machine learning, AI, computational data analysis, and a solid understanding of biological and biomedical concepts, particularly genomics, transcriptomics, or single-cell technologies. Experience in mentoring or coordinating interdisciplinary research teams, proficiency with scientific computing frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, JAX, scikit-learn), and reproducible workflow tools are required. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills are also necessary.
The position offers a salary grade of up to E 13 under the Collective Wage Agreement for Public-Sector Employees (TVöD), with social benefits such as 30 days annual leave, flexi days, public holidays, health promotion initiatives, and support for relocation and integration. The initial contract is for 3 years, with possible extension. Career development opportunities include scientific training, leadership development, and involvement in strategic projects. The Helmholtz Association is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and encourages applications from all backgrounds.
To apply, candidates should submit their application via the Helmholtz Munich online application tool, including a CV, cover letter, degrees/diplomas/certificates, references from recent employers, and contact details for at least two referees. International applicants must provide a Statement of Comparability for Foreign Higher Education Qualifications if their degree is from outside Germany.
