The Centre for the Governance of AI, Inc. (GovAI) is now accepting applications for its Summer Fellowship 2026, Research Track. This prestigious three-month fellowship is designed to launch or accelerate impactful careers in AI governance and policy. Fellows will conduct independent research projects of their choice, with mentorship from leading experts in the field. The program includes expert Q&A sessions, seminars, and workshops to develop a broad understanding of AI governance, as well as opportunities to connect with other researchers and practitioners.
GovAI is renowned for its rigorous research and close collaboration with decision-makers in government, industry, and civil society. Alumni have progressed to influential roles in organizations such as DeepMind, OpenAI, Anthropic, CSET, RAND, and top universities like Oxford and Cambridge. Fellows will spend the first two weeks exploring the AI governance landscape before finalizing a research proposal with supervisor input. Research outputs may include reports, white papers, journal articles, op-eds, or blog posts. Weekly meetings with supervisors, peer feedback sessions, and social events are integral parts of the fellowship experience. The program is full-time and in-person, based in London, UK, from 8 June to 28 August 2026. Fellows receive a £12,000 stipend, travel support, weekday lunches, and a desk in the London office. Temporary 3-month work visas can be sponsored for international applicants.
Applicants from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply, including those with experience in government, academia, industry, or civil society. While there are no strict degree requirements, relevant graduate study, research, or professional experience in policy or related areas is typical. Areas of expertise may include public policy, political science, computer science, economics, biosecurity, cybersecurity, China studies, and risk management. Selection criteria emphasize quality of work, relevant expertise, sound judgment, and team fit, including openness to feedback and a commitment to intellectual honesty and rigor.
