About this position
The AITHYRA-CeMM Joint International PhD Call offers 15-20 fully funded positions for outstanding candidates interested in molecular medicine and artificial intelligence. Hosted by CeMM, the Research Center for Molecular Medicine of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, and AITHYRA, the Research Institute for Biomedical Artificial Intelligence, this program is designed for those eager to work in a highly collaborative, interdisciplinary, and international environment in Vienna, Austria.
The PhD program, starting September 2026, is a partnership with the Medical University of Vienna, CCRI St. Anna Children’s Cancer Research Institute, TU Wien, and University of Vienna. It aims to address real-world problems in computational, biomedical, clinical, and health research, focusing on infection, immunity, metabolism, cancer, rare diseases, network medicine, design chemistry, patient-derived organoids, bioengineering, and ageing research. Research pillars include genomics, proteomics, molecular and cell biology, epigenetics, genome integrity, bioinformatics, machine learning, systems biology, chemical biology, organic synthesis, high-throughput genetics, and advanced imaging.
Students benefit from a highly interactive introductory program, supervision by top scientists, and support from the faculty of CeMM or AITHYRA. The PhD degree is awarded by the Medical University of Vienna, Technical University of Vienna, or University of Vienna. The program emphasizes scientific excellence, data generation and validation, and responsible scientific citizenship through its 'collect, connect, and contribute' modes.
CeMM is renowned for its commitment to scientific innovation in molecular medicine, focusing on immune disorders, infections, cancer, metabolic disorders, and aging. AITHYRA aims to transform biomedical science by integrating AI/ML across biological scales, with a focus on cancer, immunology, infectious diseases, and neurodegenerative disorders. Both institutes offer access to state-of-the-art technologies, a vibrant international community, and a wide range of social, cultural, and sports activities.
Funding includes a generous scholarship covering salary (EUR 2,779.60/month, paid 14 times a year), all research costs, university fees, work-related travel, and full insurance coverage for four years. Applicants must be highly motivated, possess excellent English skills, and hold (or expect to hold by September 2026) a degree in medicine, biology, chemistry, bioinformatics, computer science, engineering, physics, mathematics, or a closely related field (minimum four-year Bachelor's with honours).
Applications are open until 30 January 2026. Prospective students are encouraged to attend the online information session on 14 January 2026 to learn more about the program and meet current PhD students. For further details and to apply, visit https://apply.cemm.at/.
