About this position

The Maynard History Scholarship will enable an outstanding candidate to pursue an original doctoral research project which connects with the research interests and expertise of the university’s History team.

This three-year, fully funded PhD scholarship provides a fee waiver to the value of the full-time Home tuition rate (currently £4,712.00 p/a) and a bursary at the UKRI rate (currently £19,237 p/a). Additional funding will be available to support travel and research expenses including, where appropriate, extended work in international archives. Subject to satisfactory progress, financial support will also be available to provide for a ‘writing-up period’ following the conclusion of the scholarship.

The History group is located in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences in the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Our research work is supported by the Centre for Research in Language and Heritage and the Institute for Inclusive Communities and Environments. Our interests are diverse, spanning social, cultural, environmental, imperial and global histories from the early modern to the contemporary world.

We will welcome original and innovative proposals which build on and extend our areas of expertise, and especially those which address marginalised and neglected histories. The successful candidate will be supervised by one or more members of the History team, and applicants are encouraged to discuss proposals with prospective supervisors prior to submission. For more information on the university, the History group and our research, please see: https://www.gre.ac.uk/disciplines/history

For general enquiries about the scholarship, please contact: Dr Michael Talbot,

We are especially keen to receive applications from black and minority ethnic candidates as they are under-represented in the field of History. Applications from members of groups marginalized on any grounds enumerated under the Equality Act are also particularly welcome.
