The Trinational Doctoral Programme in Italian Studies is a unique, collaborative PhD opportunity offered by the University of Bonn (Germany), the University of Florence (Italy), and Sorbonne University (France). This programme is designed for students interested in Italian literature and related fields, providing a rich, international academic environment and the chance to earn doctoral degrees from all three partner institutions.

Students will prepare a doctoral thesis on a subject concerning Italian literature over three years, participating in lectures and intensive courses organized specifically for the programme. The curriculum includes annual intensive weeks held in Bonn, Florence, or Paris, and lectures at the University of Florence, with the rest of the year spent at the student's home institution. The programme is conducted in German and Italian, with the option to write the dissertation in either language. The doctoral candidate's colloquium in Bonn is held in German and/or Italian, while the programme during the stay abroad is in Italian. Language proficiency at the C2 CEFR level in Italian is required.

Each year, the University of Bonn and Sorbonne University admit up to four students each, while the University of Florence admits up to eight. The programme is full-time, with less than 50% online content, and is self-paced, allowing students to progress at their own speed. There are no tuition fees, but students must pay a semester contribution (approximately 330 EUR) that covers public transport and insurance. Living costs in Bonn are estimated at 800–1,000 EUR per month.

Funding opportunities are available within the university, including a competitive three-year scholarship awarded to one outstanding graduate student. Applicants must have a Master of Arts in Italian Studies (or a closely related field) with excellent grades, especially for the Master's thesis.
