About this position

The Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB) is offering two full-time research and teaching assistant positions in physics within the Faculty of Sciences. These roles combine active research in physics with the supervision of practical sessions and exercise classes, totaling approximately 300 hours per year. Research will be conducted under the guidance of a professor from the Department of Physics, and applicants are required to establish prior contact with a department professor before applying.

The Department of Physics at ULB is renowned for its cutting-edge research across a wide spectrum of fields, including fluid and plasma dynamics, astrophysics, quantum information, nonlinear optics, particle physics, complex systems, statistical mechanics, soft matter physics, nuclear physics, theoretical and mathematical physics, and condensed matter physics. The department maintains strong international collaborations, providing an intellectually stimulating environment for doctoral research.

These assistant positions offer valuable experience in higher education teaching and serve as a privileged pathway to doctoral studies. The salary conditions are competitive, and assistants are expected to pursue research leading to the completion of a PhD. The teaching component involves preparation of exercises, coordination of exercise sessions, supervision and grading of tests, quizzes, and examinations, as well as collaboration with external teaching assistants.

Applicants must possess a 120-credit Master’s degree in Physics or an equivalent recognized qualification and fulfill the requirements for admission to a doctoral program. Candidates who already hold a doctoral degree are not eligible. Essential skills include a high level of scientific expertise in physics, excellent teaching abilities, strong teamwork skills, punctuality, reliability, and proficiency in French.

To apply, candidates must submit a CV, an application letter, a note on their proposed PhD research project (4 pages), and two letters of reference, all structured using the official template available online. Incomplete applications or those not using the template will not be considered. For further information, applicants may contact Mr Bernard Knaepen at [email protected].

ULB is committed to diversity and equal opportunities, recruiting candidates based on skills regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, origin, nationality, beliefs, or disability. Reasonable accommodations in the selection procedure are available upon request. More information on ULB’s gender and diversity policy and research career regulations can be found on the university’s website.

The application deadline is 16 June 2026 at 12:00 PM (Europe/Brussels). The anticipated start date is 1 October 2026. Applications should be submitted via the official portal. Candidates from restricted regions may submit their applications via email to [email protected].
