About this position

The University of Agder (UiA) in collaboration with CERN is offering a unique PhD position in Robust and Safe Control and Planning for Robotic Platforms. This joint UiA-CERN PhD opportunity is based in the Department of Engineering Sciences at UiA and the Controls Electronics and Mechatronics group within the Beams Department at CERN. The successful candidate will spend 18 months at UiA and 18 months at CERN, remaining enrolled in the UiA PhD programme throughout the 36-month duration.

The research project focuses on legged robots, which are essential for autonomous operations in challenging environments such as CERN’s experimental caverns. These robots are critical for inspection and intervention tasks where wheeled platforms are unsuitable. The project aims to develop advanced control and planning algorithms to enhance the robustness and safety of legged robots, ensuring reliable performance under external forces, environmental disturbances, and magnetic fields. Key research objectives include improving stability metrics, accelerating their computation for real-time applications, and integrating these solutions into CERN’s robotic control framework. The ultimate goal is to enable autonomous operation with minimal human intervention, supporting critical missions in demanding environments.

Applicants must be citizens of a CERN member or associated member state and eligible for admission to UiA’s PhD programme at the Faculty of Engineering and Science. Required qualifications include an MSc (or equivalent) in mechanical engineering, mechatronics, robotics, or a similar discipline. Students in their final MSc semester may apply if they complete their degree before July 1st 2026 with a grade B or higher in their final project. Strong analytical skills, knowledge in mathematical modeling, mechanics, kinematics, dynamics, control, programming experience in C++, MATLAB or similar platforms, and familiarity with sensors, data acquisition, and electrical actuators are essential. Good English proficiency (written and oral) is mandatory, with TOEFL or IELTS scores required for international candidates unless exempt.

Desired qualifications include research experience, modeling and simulation of systems with uncertainty, and strong communication and documentation skills. Funding includes a contract of employment at UiA for 18 months as a PhD Research Fellow (code 1017), with a salary of NOK 550,800 per annum before tax and compulsory pension contribution. The subsequent 18 months at CERN are covered by a contract of association and a monthly stipend as part of the CERN Doctoral Students Programme. A travel allowance is available for travel between UiA and CERN as deemed appropriate by supervisors.
