About this position
The University of Dayton Libraries are recruiting a University Archivist at the rank of assistant professor of practice. This is a 12-month, full-time professional faculty appointment based in Dayton, Ohio, United States.
The role sits within the University Archives and Special Collections and focuses on preserving, describing, and promoting unique UD collections, including personal papers, artifacts, institutional records, digital content, and other special collections materials. The archivist will work closely with library colleagues and campus partners to document the history of the University of Dayton and support teaching, research, exhibits, and public engagement.
Core responsibilities include administering archives and special collections; acquiring, arranging, describing, preserving, and providing access to physical and born-digital materials; developing collection policies; using web archiving tools; advising on records retention; supporting researchers and reference services; improving preservation and storage conditions; identifying materials for digitization; collaborating on instruction; curating exhibits; supervising staff, students, interns, and volunteers; and contributing to library communications and strategic initiatives.
Required background includes a master’s degree in library science, public history, or a comparable field with archival coursework, plus professional experience in an academic archive or similarly complex archival environment. Candidates should know archival standards and best practices, including DACS and EAD, and have experience with digital curation, metadata, and digital preservation systems. Strong writing and relationship-building skills are also required.
Preferred qualifications include CA or DAS certification, records management experience, supervisory experience, outreach experience, and familiarity with tools and platforms such as Digital Commons, Omeka, Preservica, ArchivesSpace, Archivists Toolkit, Archon, Archive-It, Webrecorder, Conifer, and Alma.
