About this position
TU Wien, Austria's largest institution for research and higher education in technology and natural sciences, is offering a PhD position as University Assistant Prae-Doc (all genders) at the Institute of Lightweight Design and Structural Biomechanics. The position is part of the Research Group for Structural and Material Simulation and is a temporary cover until April 30, 2029, with a 30-hour/week contract and an expected start date in May 2026.
The role involves collaboration on research and teaching tasks, guidance of students, research and project activity in computational mechanics of materials, dissertation writing, publication, participation in scientific events, and assistance in organizational and administrative tasks. The research focus includes computational mechanics, finite element methods (linear and nonlinear), continuum mechanics of solids, nonlinear material modeling, damage and fracture mechanics, and the computation of adhesive joints. Experience with commercial finite element programs (preferably Abaqus) and programming skills in Python and/or Fortran are advantageous.
Applicants must hold a master's degree in mechanical engineering, civil engineering, materials science, computational science and engineering, or an equivalent field. Sound knowledge in at least one of the core research areas is required. Very good German and English communication and writing skills (B2 CEFR) are mandatory. Candidates should demonstrate interest in research, teamwork, problem-solving, and innovative thinking.
The position offers a wide variety of tasks in a collegial team, hybrid working style with up to 60% teleworking, attractive social benefits, and extensive training opportunities. The entry-level salary is determined by pay grade B1 of the Austrian collective agreement for university staff, with a minimum of EUR 2,832.10/month gross, paid 14 times per year for 30 hours/week. Relevant working experience may increase the monthly income. Subject to project funding, the position may be increased to full-time (40 hours/week).
TU Wien is committed to increasing the proportion of women in leadership positions and encourages female applicants. Preference will be given to women when equally qualified, unless reasons specific to a male applicant tilt the balance. People with special needs are equally encouraged to apply. For questions, contact the confidant for disabled persons at the university or TU Wien directly.
Applications are accepted until May 14th, 2026. Please submit your application online via the provided application link. Ensure you meet all eligibility requirements and include relevant documents.
