About this position

This four-year PhD studentship, funded by Medical Research Scotland, offers an exciting opportunity to join a collaborative project between the University of St Andrews, NHS Lothian, the University of Edinburgh, and NuCana plc. The research focuses on using advanced 3D tumour avatar models to optimise personalised medicine for cancer patients, aiming to improve outcomes through precision immunotherapy and translational impact.

As a PhD student, you will be central to the collection, processing, maintenance, and characterisation of tumour samples using a novel 3D model system. This innovative platform retains diverse cell populations and closely mimics the original tumour microenvironment, enabling more accurate preclinical testing. The project investigates the effects of innovative combination therapies, with a particular focus on enhancing response rates to immunotherapy. A new medicine, which has shown early clinical promise, will be evaluated in combination with existing treatments.

Advanced imaging and molecular profiling will be integrated to track dynamic cellular changes and dissect the roles of different cell types in therapy resistance. The outcomes will inform patient stratification strategies and identify biomarkers predictive of superior response, ultimately guiding more effective, personalised treatment approaches for cancer patients.

The studentship provides comprehensive support, including an annual tax-free stipend (£21,416 rising to £21,991), tuition fees at home rates, consumables, and a generous travel allowance. Medical Research Scotland funds fees at the Home (UK) rate, and the University of St Andrews’ Handsel Scheme may cover the overseas portion of tuition fees for exceptional candidates, subject to interview.

Applicants should have, or expect to obtain, a first or 2.1 UK honours degree and/or MSc with Merit or Distinction, or equivalent for degrees obtained outside the UK, in a relevant discipline such as biological sciences or medical sciences. Strong motivation for translational cancer research and precision medicine is expected.
