About this position

WISE (Wallenberg Initiative Materials Science for Sustainability) announces the WISE Industrial Project Call 2027 for industrial PhD and industrial postdoc projects in materials science for sustainability.

The call supports up to 11 industrial doctoral student positions and up to 8 industrial postdoctoral researcher positions. Projects may cover both basic and need-driven research, but they must clearly fit within the WISE program matrix and combine excellent materials science with a strong contribution to a sustainable future.

Applicants are expected to integrate sustainability methodology into the proposal, for example by using the WISE ASSIST tool. The call emphasizes sustainability aspects such as sourcing of materials, material criticality, resource efficiency, circularity, environmental pressures, and environmental and societal risk factors.

Eligibility: each proposal must be a partnership between academia and industry, with a main academic PI and a main industry PI. The academic PI must be employed at least 50% at one of WISE’s partner universities: Chalmers University of Technology, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Linköping University, Lund University, Uppsala University, Stockholm University, or Luleå University of Technology; or be a pre-selected researcher at an affiliated excellence group at the University of Gothenburg, Karlstad University, Umeå University, or Örebro University. The industry PI must be employed by a Swedish company or a company with substantial activity in Sweden.

Candidate requirements: for PhD projects, a Master’s or Bachelor’s degree, grades, and relevant merits/industrial experience if applicable. For postdoc projects, a PhD degree, scientific merits, academic age, and relevant industrial experience. The application must include an identified candidate, and the candidate must be in a permanent position or equivalent role in the applying industry by the WISE Welcome Meeting 2028.

Funding: the call provides funding for industrial PhD and postdoc positions; the post does not specify stipend, salary, tuition, or exact budget amounts. The project should also describe the research environment, supervision, and the financial status of the participating industry.

Deadline: the application portal opens in April 2027. The deadline is listed as 2027-06-xx at 14:00 on the call page.

How to apply: prepare the proposal in the required format, including project description, relevance to WISE, sustainability text, and candidate CV. Include the academic PI, industry PI, and any key collaborators. Submit via the WISE application portal once it opens.
